1st THE HANDSOME ONE
FLEMINGTON 26.6.09

Written by Carl Di Iorio Saturday, 26 June 2010

It wasn?t pretty but The Handsome One won the $75,000 Hanan Displays Handicap (1200m) for three-year-olds at Flemington on Saturday. Trained by Greg Eurell and ridden by Dale Smith, The Handsome One raced in fourth position behind the leaders Beyond Pardon and My Girl Helen.

When My Girl Helen raised the white flag approaching the final furlong, The Handsome One loomed up and joined a line of several runners across the track only to go home the better. Beyond Pardon provided staunch resistance to The Handsome One but it only delayed the inevitable.

The Handsome One ($4.40-$4.60-$4.40 fav) defeated Beyond Pardon($4.60-$5) by a short half head with Briefed ($5.50-$6) making up ground when it was seemingly over. Recorrido ($11-$14) finished strongly up the inside of the straight torun fourth while Heard The Latest ($16-$21) held its ground fairly for fifth.

Smith has partnered The Handsome One at all five of his starts andbelieves he has a future. ?I rode his first start at Traralgon and as I said I thought there was something special,  Smith said. "He's really dug deep today, first-up on a Heavy (10) and wasn't 100 per cent comfortable but only good horses can do what he did.

"He stuck the ears back and really had a good fight today" he never gave it up," he added. The Handsome One has been gelded since last preparation where it managed to win at Traralgon on debut and then at Caulfield before trailing Denman in the Listed Zeditave Stakes (1200m) and Manfred Stakes (1400m).

"With him being gelded, he feels a lot better in his action in stretching out and really hit the line good today," Smith said. Smith believes the son of Shamardal will "get a mile" later this prep. The Handsome One boasts a record of three wins from five starts with$149,000 in prizemoney next to his name.

2nd AWESOME HEARTED
BALLARAT 16.6.09
Awesome Hearted was brave in defeat from the John Thompson trained Paymistress over 1000m at Ballarat on the 16th june 2010. The daughter of Show a Heart showed good gate speed and was able to settle outside the leader with little trouble. Rounding the home turn she was tackled by the eventual winner and stuck on well to be beaten just over length on a slow 6 track.

Mark Smith -Saturday, 26 December 2009
Progressive colt The Handsome One remained unbeaten after outgunning favourites Doubtful Jack and AtT he Heads in Saturday's Dennis Hanrahan Hcp (1200m) at Caulfield. The 3yo son of Darley Stud's promising young stallion Shamardal (USA) won his career debut in an 1100 metres at Traralgon on December 13.
Trainer Greg Eurell revealed the stable had a big opinion of the colt although there a few problems along the way."He was quite immature early," said Eurell."He went shin-sore quite a few times. He still has a bit to learn but I like the way he went about it.Eurell is hopeful The Handsome One can progress towards the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington, a race that catapulted his recently retired champion Apache Cat to fame and fortune in 2006."I reallyl ike this horse," Eurell said. "He is a big strong colt and he has certainly started off on the right foot."Not sold at public auction,
The Handsome One is the latest promising performer from the first crop of multiple Group 1 winner Shamardal (USA) (pictured),whose season ending injury to his withers not long after the season started is looking more tragic by the day. His first crop included the VRC Oaks(G1) heroine Faint Perfume and the Listed winner Marquardt and Group 3 winner Shamoline Warrior who was morning line favourite for the VRC Derby before his late scratching. Like Shamoline Warrior,
The Handsome One is out of a mare by Dehere(USA) who is forging quite a reputation as a broodmare sire. Handsome One isthe fourth foal of the unraced Dehere And Now a half-sister to Schillaci Stakes(G2) winner Patpong out of the Listed winner Roquin (Paris Prince).Dehere And Now has a 2yo colt by Tale Of The Cat (USA). She was not covered in 2008.
